Soon, Thelma and I will meet up with Kabatch Will and Ding Vicuña in Istanbul for a 13-day adventure.

This journey is not merely a vacation — it is an immersion into the grand narrative of civilization itself, a pilgrimage to where time dances, and the human story continues to unfold.

As part of my ongoing Reflection of Light series, I’ll be sharing short reflections from the road — moments when light, history, and human connection intersect in this land of empires, poets, and faith.

To begin this journey of thought and travel, here’s the first piece:

🇹🇷 Reflection of Light — Türkiye Edition Begins

The Significance of Turkey — Where Civilizations Meet and Time Dances

By Edwin O. Paña

To speak of Turkey is to summon the very crossroads of history, culture, and geography. It is a land where empires converged and where continents—Europe and Asia—gently meet across the shimmering waters of the Bosphorus.

More than a nation, Turkey is a vast open-air museum, shaped by the hands of Hittites, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Seljuks, and Ottomans—each leaving behind stories etched in stone, marble, and minaret. It is the birthplace of legends: Achilles and Hector on the plains of Troy, Saint Paul preaching in Ephesus, and Rumi writing verses of divine love in Konya.

Its cities are tapestries of contrasts—Istanbul, vibrant and timeless, stands where Byzantium and Constantinople once reigned; Cappadocia amazes with lunar-like valleys and cave dwellings; Pamukkale dazzles with its cascading white terraces born of thermal waters. Turkey’s landscapes mirror its soul: azure coasts embracing ancient ruins, volcanic plains crowned with fairy chimneys, and mountains wrapped in myth and mist.

Its culture, layered and welcoming, reveals a cuisine born of caravans and trade routes, and a hospitality that flows as naturally as the Bosphorus current. Yet Turkey is no mere relic of the past—it pulses with modern energy, its people walking gracefully between reverence and reinvention. A simple cup of çay shared with strangers can become a bridge between worlds, turning moments into memories and travelers into storytellers.
